“Participating in supervision is every dietitian’s responsibility”

Crow T, Kiely L, Harris D, Palermo C

DDD Centre for Recovery have experienced dietitians who offer individual professional supervision to help dietitians feel safe, confident, and effective in their work. Our supervisors are trained with DSRAI (Dietitians Supervision Resources Australia & International).

What is Professional Supervision?

Supervision is a joint endeavour in which the practitioner with the help of a supervisor, attends to their clients, themselves as part of their client practitioner relationships, and the wider systemic context, and by doing so improves the quality of their work, transforms their client relationships, continuously develops themselves, their practice and the wider profession”

[Hawkins & Shohet ‘Supervision and the helping professionals’ (2012)]

According to DSRAI, professional supervision is:

  •  A structured and formal process which is strengths based with a clear purpose

  • Contained safely within a supervisory alliance built on mutual trust and respect between supervisee and supervisor

  • Built collaboratively by the skillful facilitation delivered by the supervisor and the content prepared by the supervisee

  • Focused on the practice of the supervisee

  • Committed to providing support, accountability and opportunity to learn from experience

  • Dedicated to incorporating reflection as a principal learning modality. Learning is at the heart of effective supervision.

  • Outcome focused delivering on the professional development of the supervisee and monitoring of professional standards

  • Centered on the welfare of the client and the quality and safety of service they receive

  • Relevant  to dietitians in all domains and settings and spans professional, clinical, personal and cultural aspects of practice

  • A process which leaves the supervisee feeling supported, informed and clear

  • An evolving practice that will mean different things to different supervisees across their career span and development as a practitioner

We find that professional supervision is essential in improving dietitians’ reflective practice skills so that we can be present with our clients every session, and be the authentic supporter.
